Program Prerequisites & Required Documents
One thing you will have noticed as you begin to apply to a graduate program is that the process is different than applying to an undergraduate program. This is because, typically, you are focused on applying to a particular program rather than to an overall institution.
Although there are institutional minimum admission requirements that are applicable to all programs, each graduate program generally has its own unique minimum requirements which may be higher than what the institution requires. At Carleton, you will need to check the program website(s) for the program(s) in which you are interested to determine the specific requirements for that program. You can review Carleton’s minimum admission requirements which are applicable to all programs on our website.
Required Documents
Getting into graduate school is not just about marks, although these do play an important role in the decision-making process. Every program requires you to submit supplementary forms or required documents as part of your overall application. These can include documents such as transcripts, letters of reference, a statement of intent, a writing sample, CV/resumé, English-language test scores, aptitude test results, a portfolio, etc. These additional documents provide more information to allow program administrators and faculty to get a more rounded picture of you in order to assess your suitability for entrance to their graduate program.
At Carleton, these documents are explained in general terms on our required documents page. Specific document instructions can be found once you start your online application.
As a key piece of advice, it is important to take some time to write your Statement of Intent as this can often make or break your application. (More about this in a future edition of Application Insider.)
At Carleton, once you have submitted your online application and paid the non-refundable application fee of $100 per program ($150 for the MBA), Carleton will email you instructions on how to access Carleton Central and upload any remaining documents. Please note that these documents need to be in PDF format. You can learn more about Carleton’s graduate application process on our website.
Application Insider provides prospective students with a series of tips on how to apply to graduate school. The series is based on Carleton’s application policies, but the information can be useful in all graduate school applications. You can view the complete series here.
