Carleton graduates in Building Engineering-related areas have obtained prestigious positions in major engineering companies as building scientists, energy modellers, sustainability consultants, restoration and retrofit experts for heritage buildings, digital and advanced computational modelling specialists, and fire safety engineers. In addition, many of our graduates are employed in the public sector including but not limited to the federal government departments such as the National Research Council, Natural Resources Canada, Public Services and Procurement Canada, municipalities (e.g., City of Ottawa), and utilities (e.g., Hydro Ottawa).
Pathways
Course-Based (MEng)
The Master of Engineering (MEng) is a course-based program designed to support professional development through skill-building in advanced engineering topics. As a coursework-focused degree, the MEng does not require a research thesis and is therefore well-suited to students pursuing careers in industry, government or professional practice. Students may also choose to complement their coursework with a research project or directed study, deepening expertise in a specialized technical area of interest.
Thesis-Based (MASc)
A Master of Applied Science (MASc) includes a thesis, which is a research project which demonstrates a student’s ability to apply knowledge from their field to investigate a specific question or problem in a rigorous and scholarly way. Applicants to the MASc are required to have the support of a faculty member who will supervise their research. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make arrangements with a supervisor.
Concentrations
Concentrations in Building Performance, Fire Safety and Heritage Conservation are available through the MASc and MEng programs.
Opportunity for Direct-from-Bachelor PhD Entry
Exceptional applicants may be considered for direct entry into our PhD program, offering the opportunity to begin doctoral studies directly after completing an undergraduate degree, based on academic preparation and research experience.
