Online Asynchronous Program for the Next Generation of Industry Leaders in Critical Mineral Discovery
This program is ideal for early to mid-career geoscientists and engineers who are ready to take on greater responsibility in the exploration industry. Combine your technical expertise with a global understanding of how mineral deposits are created, discovered, evaluated, financed, and developed.
Professional Skill Development
Graduates of this fully online program will be able to:
- Explain and recognize the key geological features and formation processes of all major mineral types;
- Select and justify exploration methods that best acquire the data needed to characterize specific targets;
- Describe and evaluate mining, beneficiation, refining, and waste management options to gauge the feasibility of potential mining projects;
- Estimate and interpret the potential market value of mineral assets;
- Understand and apply economic and financial system concepts to support sound decisions when raising funds for mineral exploration;
- Operate ethically and lawfully within the regulatory frameworks governing mineral exploration.
Industry-Focused Learning with Real-World Application
Students will create real-world deliverables using case studies and exploration-oriented software to showcase their professional portfolios. By the end of the program, students will understand what it takes to bring an exploration project into development and how to decide whether to proceed at all decision points, from target selection to mining.
Admission Requirements
- Four-year degree in Geoscience or Mineral Engineering with a B+ in your last two years of study;
- Equivalency to the Knowledge Requirements of Geoscientists Canada is required;
- English proficiency: IELTS: 7.0 overall (with 6.5 in each band), TOEFL iBT: 100 overall (with 24 in each component) and CAEL: 70 overall.

Financial Aid
This program is not eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) or other provincial financial aid. Each course in this program costs C$5,000.
Additional Registration Information
Please ensure when you are applying for this program in Carleton360, that you declare full-time status. Students registered as full-time in MERM may take 1, 2, 3 or 4 courses without being registered as part-time, specific to this individual program only.
The exception to the above is that MERM 5007 and MERM 5008 must be taken concurrently.
All full-time students are automatically enrolled in the Graduate Students’ Association health plan, however any student living outside of Canada can request an exemption. The fee will appear on your student account but once the opt-out is processed it will be refunded by Carleton, generally by the end of the semester. Students who live in Canada, can also opt-out if they have alternate health coverage.
